A program of the Humboldt Area Foundation since 2002, the Native Cultures Fund supports California Native arts, cultural revitalization, and knowledge transmission between generations. Founded by California Indian leaders, and Native led, the fund provides grants, staff support, and regional gatherings, with an approach that builds upon long-standing relationships and honors customary protocols across the 50-county region it serves. This grant advances the Performing Arts Program’s Communities strategy by enabling the Native Cultures Fund to continue to support an array of artists, culture bearers, and lifeways.

Through its grants program, the Native Cultures Fund supports California’s Native peoples in creating meaningful art within their communities, reaching fifty counties statewide. Since its creation in 2000 with support from the Hewlett Foundation, the Fund has awarded more than $1 million to artists and cultural stewards for more than 275 community projects. The Native Cultures Fund proposes to support at least fifteen new projects each year and increase its outreach to Bay Area artists and communities through regional meetings.
