Tate Barend

Program Associate, Gender Equity and Governance

Tate Barend is a Program Associate in the Gender Equity and Governance program at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. He supports the Inclusive Governance strategy that aims to promote the efforts of underserved populations to exercise power and to make government more responsive to their needs.

Previously, he held a fellowship for the Future Forum Congressional Caucus where he worked to support young Americans’ voices in government. Tate has spent time on Democratic voter engagement in Kentucky and Georgia, while he got his start as an intern in Washington D.C. with then-senator Kamala Harris.

Tate took a circuitous route to graduation, postponing his final semester to study in Beijing, China. After the semester, he explored Russia and Mongolia by train. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in political science with a minor in political economy. In his free time, he enjoys the outdoors, traveling, and trying new foods.
